While there are many different chiropractic techniques, they are all aimed at removing interference from the nervous system to allow self-healing and optimal health. Chiropractic focuses on the health of the nervous system and it's relationship to the health of the whole body. It is through the nervous system that we gather and respond consciously and unconsciously to all information from both the outside world and our own bodies. Internally this communication is essential for our health and comfort. Interruptions of this communication can be the cause of decreased organ response, pain, numbness and tingling. Irritated joints, and muscle issues are often the source of nervous system interference. Most chiropractic techniques are directed at solving joint and muscle problems to indirectly affect the peripheral nervous system, (nerves outside the head and spinal cord), which in turn affects the central nervous system, (the brain and the spinal cord). In addition, at Balance Chiropractic, Dr. Smith, uses a technique called nerve mobilization to treat peripheral nerves directly. He also uses cranial work to address the tissues around and in the central nervous system. |

Chiropractic has both an interesting scientific as well as political history. The term chiropractic was coined by David Daniel Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, and is derived from the Greek words praxis and cheir; to practice by hand. An appropriate name considering that chiropractic treatment methods can be traced back to Hypocrites and other ancient Greek and Roman physicians. Spinal adjustments are also documented in early Egyptian, Hindu and Chinese manuscripts. |
